Moffat: One of the supposedly “controversial” things—actually a subject we never really discussed at all, is Sherlock’s sexuality. Because although people talk about it being ambiguous or mysterious, the truth is the books are completely clear: he’s not interested at all. He’s interested in what his brain is doing, not the other end of his body.
Gatiss: And all the rest is transport.
Moffat: Yeah. But, you know, the fact that people say, ‘he shows no interest in women therefore he must be gay’, well he shows no interest in men either. That’s just not what he does. At all.
Gatiss: After 120 years of 200 interpretations, the focus gets shifted onto little bits and pieces that slightly get out of control. For instance “The Woman” beats him. She’s called that not because he’s in love with her necessarily, but because she’s the only woman who beat him. Out of all the women to whom he’s indifferent, she’s the one he’s not.
